Outlander Immersion - 9 nights - May 9th 2016

The Scotland of Jamie & Claire (small group Outlander Tour - 7 people maximum)

By special request, we are adding Callanish Standing stones and an option for the Jacobite Steam Train for an additional fee.

How is this tour different than other tours out there?

The size. With only 7 people maximum, that means that you won't have a multitude of people pouring out of a bus at Clava Cairns or Glen Affric where it is nice to have a bit of peace when you're trying to go back through the stones or see if you can spot Jamie and Claire in the woods. (But watch out for Black Jack - you wouldn't want him coming up behind you!)
It also means we have more flexibility. We can make some adjustments to the tour based on the desires of those on the tour.
And we can stay at smaller inns or B&Bs who can serve delicious breakfasts.
The pace. This tour has been designed to be more moderately paced than other tours.
Gwyllyn the Bard. An evening entertainment with songs, stories about Scottish history, Jacobites, plus his work on the Outlander set.
Inverness Tours. Diana herself recommends Inverness Tours and the guides Hugh Allison, Ian Deveney and Laura Moon have been guiding Outlander tours for years and they are also familiar with the TV series. Plus they know all the best lunch stops. AND... Hugh and I found "the hill"!! The October 2015 tour was there when they were setting up for filming and actually got to see the Standing Stones on the hill!!
And finally, me. I am an IATAN Accredited Travel Agent and Outlander fan just like the rest of you. I've watched the Outlander TV series (multiple times - except the last 2) read all of the Outlander books (well 1/2 way through MOBY). I create individual blogs for each of the tours so you can get to know each other before the tour. And I have traveled - a lot - including a recent trip to Scotland to check out all of these places. So I can give you general tips on travel as well as tips on Scotland specifically. See some testimonials here.

Pre-night - Glasgow
Arrive Glasgow and transfer to your pre-booked accommodations. On your own, see some of the sites used for the Outlander TV series including the park that was used for the outside of Castle Leoch. In the evening, we'll have special entertainment provided by 'Gwyllyn the Bard' that played for Jamie and Claire in Castle Leoch in the Outlander tv show.
Overnight in Glasgow.

Day 0 - Travel to Fort William
Today you will travel on your prebooked train trip from Glasgow Queen Street Station toward Fort William. Our wonderful guide Hugh has suggested picking you up at Crianlarich Station at 2.07pm and transporting you to your hotel in Fort William. The road takes a much more direct route than the train to Fort William across Rannoch Moor and through Glencoe.

Day 1 - Journey begins - The Scenic Jacobite Steam train and the Isle of Skye
In the morning, you will be transported to see Fort William (new and old). Then you will be taken to the the railway station for the unforgetable ride on the Jacobite Steam train. Hugh will drive across and meet the train in Mallaig where you'll be picked up and will board the ferry to Armadale on the Isle of Skye. We will conclude the day with a visit to the Clan Donald Centre. Overnight in Broadford.

Day 2 - Ferry from Skye to Lewis & Harris, Callanish Standing Stones
Today we will take the ferry from Uig at the tip of the Isle of Sky to Tarbert on the Isle of Harris. We will travel through the remote islands of the Outer Hebrides to the far edge of the earth to see the Callanish Standing Stones and marvel at the 15 foot high stones and possibly feel the vibrations that Claire felt before she went back. Overnight in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.

Day 3 - Callanish Visitor's Center, Blackhouse at Arnol, Dun Carloway, Ferry back to the mainland and Loch Garve
On this day we'll go back to the Callanish Standing Stones to get more pictures and see the the optional display inside the visitor's center. After that we'll see one of a traditional, fully furnished, Lewis thatched house that provides a unique insight into island life. From there we'll move on to Dun Carloway, if available, to see one of the best-preserved brochs in Scotland. Then we'll take the ferry back to the mainland through Ullapool and along Loch Garve known from Outlander as the home of the water kelpie. On to Inverness for the night.

Day 4 - A boat ride on Loch Ness & Urquhart Castle, 'Lallybroch', Glen Affric and Beauly Priory
Begin with a drive down the shores of Loch Ness, where, in the book, Claire saw the Water Creature. Photostop at Urquhart Castle and a boat trip on Loch Ness reminiscent of the one Claire took with Frank. Then we stop at 'Lallybroch' for lunch or afternoon tea and see a weapons presentation. Travel through the scenic highlands to Glen Affric. A walk through this glen will take you into the remains of the Great Caledonian Pine Forest where Jamie and Claire wandered after their wedding. Next visit Beauly the seat of Clan Fraser and Beauly Priory where Claire liked to go for solitude in the Outlander book. Overnight in Inverness.

Day 5 - Culloden Battlefield, and Clava Cairns Standing Stones, the TV location of 'Rent'
On to Culloden Battlefield for a exploration of the new visitor's center and a walk around the (paved) moors to see the Fraser clan stone and the memorial for all clans. Next stop is Clava Cairns. This is the location that has a split stone like the one in the Outlander book that Claire went through. Culloden Centre for lunch. Today we will journey to the 18th century village where 'Rent' was filmed and you'll be able to see the hut where Dougal ripped Jamie's shirt down the back in the TV episode of Outlander. Then Craig na Dun Hill, and views of Loch Rannoch. Overnight in Aberfeldy.

Day 6 - Falkland, Culross and Castle Leoch
En route to Stirling we'll visit Falkland the village that was used for Inverness in the Starz TV Series "Outlander". Stop at the Covenanter Hotel and recall the hanging sign for "Mrs Baird's Guesthouse, est. 1865". Walk around the town and see the Falkland Parish Church which was renamed Dalneigh Parish Church for the film and wander around the area surrounding the Bruce Fountain. After Falkland we’ll drive by Balgonie Castle, location for MacRannoch’s Castle – Eldridge Hall. Then we’ll continue, to the charming Royal Burgh of Culross. This was the film location for Gellis Duncan's Cranesmuir in the TV version of Outlander. Culross is a fascinating example of a town that time has forgotten. The Town House was built in 1626 and was the administrative centre of Culross with a tollbooth and witches prison. Finally we'll travel on to Doune Castle the film location for Castle Leoch with plenty of time to look around and listen to the interesting audio guide as well as time to take loads of pictures. Overnight in Stirling.

Day 7 - 'Railway Station', “Wentworth exterior” 'Fort William' 'Lallybroch' and Duke of Sandringham’s exterior
Next stop will be the station where Frank and Claire said farewell. Then there’ll be a look at the outside of one of the locations used as Wentworth Prison. Blackness Castle will be our third location. It stands in for Fort William in the TV version of Outlander. We'll look at the Duke of Sndringham’s House from the outside and also stop by the site used for Lallybroch in the tv series if it is available this day. Finally continue our journey toward Edinburgh.

Day 8 - Edinburgh Royal Mile - Scottish Evening
Today after a guided walking tour of the Royal Mile including the World's End, White Horse Close there will be a panoramic drive through Holyrood Park. This evening we will attend a Scottish themed dinner in Edinburgh. Overnight in Edinburgh.

Day 9 - Edinburgh - End of Tour
This morning transfer to the airport for your flight home (or you may choose to extend your stay and see more of Scotland).

The price for this tour is $2779 per person double occupancy for land only, $860 single supplement. Prices are subject to change until the final payment is made.
